Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle

After the Highlands, we drove down south to Edinburgh.  Like the rest of Scotland, Edinburgh combined evocative old buildings, brilliant green grass, and friendly people.

The new Scottish Parliament building – some controversial architecture, certainly, but hubby and I were happy for the Scottish people that they finally have their Parliament back!

The brooding Palace of Holyroodhouse, the royal family’s official residence in Scotland.  (No, it’s not Balmoral.)  We took the tour and enjoyed imagining the current royals wandering around the Palace and the grounds on one of their official trips to Scotland.

Haunting ruins of Holyrood Abbey.  I love meandering around these old structures and trying to picture how they appeared when they were new and in use.

City views.

I could have stayed forever.

  1. Have you gone to England yet this year? When are you going if you haven’t gone yet? I visited England for the first time last weekend and loved it, though I only visited Brighton. The town was adorable and the countryside was beautiful, and since it was on the sea, it was very relaxing to visit the beach (though it was a rock beach, not a sandy one). It kind of reminded me of Cape Cod but much bigger and more urban. I traveled through London briefly on my way to the airport, so my only experience there was being lost and stressed, but I get to go back for Christmas so I can make up for it!
I love walking through the ruins of old buildings too. I’m sure that the Abby was fascinating. If you get the chance, you should definitely check out Pompeii if you ever visit Italy 🙂
